Limited Edition – Blue Nabeeha Mohamed Earnest Fashionista
$782.00
The colourful, bold and quirky work of Nabeeha Mohamed (b. 1988) explores the intersections of identity in post-Apartheid South Africa – complex junctures of tension heightened by her humorous, irreverent treatment of otherwise serious and melancholic subject matter. She draws on her personal context as a woman of colour growing up in a privileged, predominantly white society, as well as the broader issues that inform this context: the country’s stark imbalances and inequalities, class privilege and capitalism, and the fetishization of women of colour. Mohamed has participated in group shows and art fairs in Venice, Antwerp, Amsterdam, Rotterdam, New York as well as cities across South Africa, and in 2017 she completed a residency in Ilhabela (Brazil). 2020 marked her debut solo show, Sunshine on my skin is my favourite colour.
Earnest Fashionista is a self portrait. Mohamed describes this work as herself in character, or in an alter-ego state. The canon of the self portrait allows for creativity and morphing identity. `Earnest Fashionista’ being a somewhat subtle transformation into an it-girl fashion figure who excudes a coolness foreign to the everyday self.
